If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, then what helps a pet live a long and healthy life? An annual health exam of course! Our pets cannot tell us how they are feeling and many times they will try to hide the signs of chronic pain or illness. This can result in changes in appetite, behaviour or activity which may be mistaken as 'aging' in older pets. Only by regular, thorough physical examinations, together with laboratory tests if needed, can these problems be detected before they become too severe.
Vaccines help prevent many illnesses that affect pets. The type of lifestyle your pet has will help us determine a proper vaccine regime to provide the safest and best protection to keep your pets happy and healthy.
The veterinarians at Bowmont Animal Hospital have over 30 years combined experience in soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery. We provide our clients with such surgical procedures as spays, neuters, knee ligament repair, abdominal surgery including bladder, and advanced oral surgery.
For more advanced procedures (such as TPLOs), we have the option of bringing in surgical specialists and board certified anaesthesiologists if the situation warrants.
Although tags and collars are important, they can tear or slip off. Microchips are another way of identification and is a ticket home. With microchipping, your veterinarian will inject a rice size computer chip inbetween your pets shoulder blades underneath the skin. The microchip is entered into an international database with your contact information, which can be scanned by a scanner from your local vet clinic or humane society. If your contact information is up to date, then the vet clinic or humane society can contact you and reunite you with your pet.
Another alternative for identification is a tattoo for your pet. Tattoo identification is provincial, visible and permanent. It is usually in the inside your pet's ear and can only be done under anesthetic normally at the same time as a spay, neuter or any other surgical procedure.
This area of medicine is similar to human medicine, with one major distinction - we will always call you to discuss the results. Our veterinarians will take the time to explain what tests should be performed and why. They will also take the time to describe what the results will mean to your pet's future. Will your pet require surgery, hospitalization or medication? All of your concerns will be addressed as we help your pet return to full health.
RADIOLOGY & ULTRASOUND
We have a modern x-ray machine that allows us to develop high quality x-rays in the hospital. In addition we have ultrasound technology that allows us to look at the structure if internal organs in a non-invasive manner and enables us to take biopsies of these organs when needed without the need for surgery. Our dental surgery department is also equipped with a dental x-ray.
DENTISTRY & ADVANCED DENTISTRY
Dental Disease is the leading cause of ill health in dogs and cats and our emphasis is on prevention. Here at Woodlands, we take proper dental care very seriously. We encourage our clients to brush their pets' teeth on a daily basis and offer brushing technique demonstrations at no charge by one of our knowledgeable staff members. All of our veterinarians are very knowledgeable in diagnosing early dental disease and will discuss treatment options with you during the annual health examination.
